8 Fundamental Movements of Jiu Jitsu and How To Do Them

minute/s reading time

The essential basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) include:

  1. Stance – A stable and balanced stance that provides a strong foundation for movement and allows for quick transitions.
  • Shrimping – A basic movement used for escaping from bottom positions, which involves driving the hips back and tucking the knees in.
  • Bridging – A movement used for escaping from bottom positions, which involves pushing off the ground with the legs and shoulders to create momentum.
  • Guard – A bottom position where the legs are used to control the opponent’s upper body and prevent them from passing.
  • Guard Passing – The act of moving past the opponent’s legs and establishing a dominant position.
  • Mount – A dominant top position where the practitioner is seated on their opponent’s chest, with their legs straddling the opponent’s waist.
  • Side Control – A dominant top position where the practitioner is lying on their side, with their knees bent and legs entwined with the opponent’s.
  • Rear Mount – A dominant top position where the practitioner is straddling the opponent’s back, with their legs locked around the opponent’s waist.

These are the fundamental movements and positions that form the building blocks of BJJ and are typically taught to beginners. As you advance, you will continue to build on these basics and develop into more advanced techniques.
